MOSAIC ART STUDIO

MOSAICS ACCORDING TO THE RIGOROUS BYZANTINE RAVENNA TECHNIQUE

THE BYZANTINE TECHNIQUE

MOSAIC ART STUDIO is able to meet all the requests for wall, floor, easel, gift and fancy goods mosaics according to the rigorous Roman and Byzantine Ravenna technique.

Roman and Byzantine Technique The tradition of the Ravenna School is well known for its production and has been able to combine tradition with the technological evolution of materials,  binders and supports, without compromising the authenticity of the mosaic product.
The tecniques in use are still founded on manual production, in a continuous evolution through the centuries which has substantially modified only the substructure binding materials, improving their quality and resistance to adapt them to the contemporary technological needs.
glass paste, smalti, marble The constituent materials of the tesserae surface are the same as the originals and are still produced in Venice according to old techniques.
They are vitreous materials - a glass paste - called Smalti, different from the common vitreous paste in quality and aesthetic features. These smalti are hand-cut with a hack hammer and a chisel, producing a single tessera in the desired form and dimension.
The chromatic scale is characterized by a range of around one thousand colours!
mosaic making The gathering of these features represents the uniqueness of the Ravenna mosaic, which through the use of a direct technique of execution (setting up a single tessera on fresh mortar) reaches levels of high aesthetic quality, giving a perception of movement.

Further data are available through the studio's curricula and any quotation based on specific projects or particular needs is obtainable on request
